Cowgirl golf wins district, heads to state

The Crook County Cowgirls won the 4A/3A/2A.1A Special District 2 Golf Tournament, held May 12-13 at Meadow Lakes Golf Course in Prineville.

The Cowgirls carded a team 790, outlasting Riverdale, who had a stronger second day of the tourney than Crook County but still trailed by 17 strokes with a 807. Oregon Episcopal was third way back with 973 and Madras fourth with 954.

The Cowgirls and Riverdale advanced to the state tournament, set for May 19 at Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis.

Catlin Gabel’s Vishaka Priyan was a dominant force on the course. The junior shot an amazing 33-33-66 on day one, with seven birdies and only one bogey. On Tuesday, she was nearly as outstanding, carding a 35-36-71. She won the medalist honors by 39 strokes.

Haylee Noland and Sawyer McDonald, the Cowgirls’ No. 1 and 2 seeds and experienced seniors, finished second and third overall in the tournament. Noland shot a 40-43-83 on Monday, featuring a birdie on the par 5 No. 3 hole. She had a strong 41 on the front nine on day two, again birdying No. 3. But she struggled through six double-bogeys on her back nine Tuesday to shoot a 52 to have a 93 on the day.

McDonald opened with a 43 on the front nine Monday and shot a 46 with a birdie on the par 4 No. 16 hole on the back nine to highlight a 46. On day two, she was a consistent 46-45 for a 91.

Berkley Jones, a freshman, had an outstanding tourney, finishing eighth overall. The team’s No. 4 seed shot a 55 in the opening nine Monday, enduring an 11 on No. 3, but had an outstanding 42 on the back nine, with a birdie on the par 3 13th plus two pars. Day two Jones shot a 55-49-104.

The Cowgirls third-seed golfer, Paisley Wood, shot a 59-54-113 on day one then followed that up with a 55-65-120 on Tuesday.

Freshman Lucy Weaver was the Cowgirls’ fifth seed on day two. She had a 71 on the front nine Monday, having three holes with double digit strokes. She was much better on the back nine, carding a 61. Sixth-seed Tayden Shores, carded a 66-66-122, filling the fifth spot on the first day.

The Cowgirls won the state title in 2023 and finished second last year.
