Cowboy golf third at district tournament, makes state

The Crook County Cowboys golf squad finished third at the 4A Special District 1 Tournament May 12 and 13, earning a spot at the state tournament.

Seaside rolled to the tourney victory by 46 strokes over the runner-up Madras White Buffalos. The Cowboys were just six strokes behind Madras at 699. Scappoose was fourth with 711.

The top four teams qualify for the state tournament, which is played at Tokatee Golf Course near McKenzie Bridge and starts Monday, March 19.

The Cowboys’ Brit Iverson had an excellent district tournament, finishing third as an individual. The junior suffered two double bogeys in his first nine on day one of the tourney to card a 42.He then carved seven strokes off that count on the back nine, shooting a 35. He had just one bogey, a five on the par four 15, but erased that with two birdies, on 14 and 17.

The front nine was tough again on day two, and Iverson carded another 42. four bogeys and five pars earned a 40 on the back nine. But his 77-82-159 slotted him in third overall.

Molalla’s Massimo Cereghino trailed Seaside’s Xanh Quang after the first day by three strokes after Quang carded a one-over 73. But on day two, Cereghino improved by two strokes to shoot a 74, finishing with a 162, while Quang slipped six strokes to a 79, giving Cereghino the medalist honor with his 150.

Two Seaside golfers followed Iverson, Alex Arden with a 161 and Logan Norman with a 165. Madras golfer Tate Alire was sixth with a 168.

The Cowboys’ fourth-seeded golfer, Graeme O’Gorman, came through with the team’s second best round with a 85-88-173. O’Gorman birdied the par 5 hole three on day one but absorbed two doubles bogies then shot an eight on a par 4 hole 16. He birdied hole two to highlight the second day but fought off four double bogeys.

No. 2 seed Zach Nash with 15th overall with a steady 88-87-175. Liam Huffman, the third seed for the Cowboys, struggled with only one par on day one. He got four pars on day two but took six double bogeys are higher on day two.

Three double bogeys hindered the first nine for Nash, but he had two birdies on the two par 5s on the back nine on day one to shoot a 43. A brutal four over on the par 5 hole three to start day two was tough, but he offset that with six pars. Nash had three pars and a bogey to start the back nine, but ended with three bogeys, a double bogey then a triple bogey on his final hole, ending with a 45 on the back nine.

Only the top four cards were included in team scoring.

Ryan Quinn played day one for Crook County and shot a 50-46-96. He had five pars on the 18 but suffered through a triple, a six-over, and a three-over on the day. Justin Mitchell played on a day two and had a strong 40 on the front nine, featuring a birdie on the par 4 hole nine. But he slipped to 50 on the back nine, with five double bogeys.
